Mission Statement:

The Hispanic Business Student Association has the mission to increase the number of culturally responsible Hispanic Students, excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community.  The HBSA organization is known as the liaison between the business students of Texas A&M University and the business world.

History

Founded at the Texas A&M campus in 1992, the Hispanic Business Student Association (HBSA) is a professional, business organization in the Mays Business School of Texas A&M University.

Characteristics

The HBSA organization focuses on academic achievement, cultural awareness, civic responsibilities, and professionalism.  These four characteristics make the core of the HBSA organization, while also being tools used mold and develop leaders.

Academic Achievement:

Academic achievement is a necessary characteristic in the HBSA organization.  Not only are grades important in one’s voyage to obtain a successful job, but actually understanding and applying the concepts learned is also important.  The HBSA members promote academic achievement through study groups.  Upper classmen in the HBSA organization also provide under classmen with professor recommendations and discounted textbook prices.

Cultural Awareness:

Cultural awareness is another core characteristic of the HBSA.  Through various events throughout the year, the HBSA emphasizes the acceptance of diversity.  The HBSA hosted “Caliente” event is the primary example on how the HBSA promotes the Hispanic culture.  “Caliente” is an event held during Hispanic Heritage Month that is filled with Hispanic food, music, and dance for the entire Texas A&M University to take part in.

Civic Responsibilities:

Civic responsibilities are developed through participation in community events.  The HBSA volunteers for “Aggie Replant,” “Big Event,” “Relay for Life,” and “Mays Project.”  All of these benevolent events greatly reward the HBSA members.  Civic responsibilities are fun to the HBSA and completed through learned professionalism.

Professionalism:

Professionalism is a key component in developing into a leader from the HBSA.  The HBSA encourages its members to be professional in all aspects when representing the organization.  These aspects include professional behavior, professional business attire, and professional group work.

National Hispanic Business Association

The Texas A&M chapter of the Hispanic Business Student Association is a recognized chapter of the National Hispanic Business Association (NHBA).  The NHBA is an organization and network of “emerging professionals.”  The NHBA is “dedicated to helping Hispanic undergraduate business students develop the real-world skills and relationships needed to launch successful professional careers.”

NHBA Leadership Conference:

Each year, the Texas A&M HBSA attends NHBA’s national leadership conference.  HBSA chapters from 50 other universities in the nation also attend this conference.  The NHBA conference hosts workshops, competitions, and a large career fair.  University chapters network with one another and network with companies present at the conference.  These firms in the Fortune 500 are geared to hire qualified, educated college students.  The NHBA Leadership Conference has been held in Los Angeles, California, Chicago, Illinois, and Las Vegas, Nevada.

The 20th National Hispanic Business Association Leadership will be hosted by the Texas A&M chapter of the Hispanic Business Student Association in Forth Worth, Texas. A WHOOP!  After 20 years of hosting the leadership conference, the NHBA has decided to bring the conference back to its origination state – Texas.  The Texas A&M HBSA is stoked to be given this honor.
